Now I have to say, finding the best low carb beers in Australia was one of the most enjoyable blog posts research projects I’ve done. It’s a tough gig but someone has to do it ?

Low carb beers have been available in Australia for over 10 years now – maybe even longer. Now I haven’t gone back and checked the beer archives but I think it was probably Carlton Dry which kicked off the craze, at least that’s how I remember it. Since then, there’s been a huge amount of lower and lower and lower carb beers coming out and they seem to be getting better too!

So low carb beer is all puppies and rainbows then right?

Well not quite. I don’t want to rain on your parade but drinking low carb beer WILL NOT make you lose weight, more attractive or turn into Arnold. All alcohol has calories, 7 of them per gram of alcohol to be exact. Furthermore, while your liver is busy processing the alcohol, your metabolism basically stops.

Victoria Health recently released a study about this as well, finding that 15% of people even drunk more, believing that it was “healthy” for them.

I’m not your mother so I’ll just say it once… drink responsibly and if you don’t want to drink, then don’t. If you feel like you have a problem with Alcohol, DrinkWise has a great list of people you can talk to.

Ok, so you’ve decided you want a low carb beer but not sure which one to choose?

Here are 5 of the Best Low Carb Beers in Australia

Coopers Clear

5. Coopers Clear – 3.6g

Energy: 462 kJ (110 Cal) // Carbs: 3.6g

This is the only one on this list I haven’t actually tried myself so I’ll let Coopers themselves tell you about it:

“This smooth and easy to enjoy lager has a fragrant aroma with a hint of fruity esters that’s unmistakably Coopers. With a light golden colour and a creamy white head, this beer is best enjoyed ice cold, on a sunny afternoon in a beer garden with friends.”

Sounds good to me Coopers.

Hahn Super Dry

4. Hahn Super Dry Premium Low Carb – 3.0g

Energy: 387 kJ (92 Cal) // Carbs: 3.0g

This was one of the early low carb beers to hit the market in Australia and it’s stuck around which means it must be alright! A crisp and refreshing taste with a dry finish.

3. Summer Bright Lager – 2.7g

Energy: 393 kJ (94 Cal) // Carbs: 2.7g

This is another favourite of mine for a hot summers day (they nailed the brand). It’s made by XXXX and is a really easy one to drink. I find a lot of heavier beers leave me feeling really bloated but not this one.

It also doesn’t have a super strong “beer flavour” (that’s the technical term) so if you’re not a big beer drinker, you might actually enjoy this one.

Pure Blonde Ultra Low Carb Lager

2. Pure Blonde Ultra Low Carb Lager – 1.7g

Energy: 387 kJ (92 Cal) // Carbs: 1.7g

A crisp refreshing full strength lager. This is the beer of choice of a few of my friends not because it’s low carb, just because it’s delicious, light (flavour) and nice to drink. The low carb is just a bonus.

There’s also a Pure Blonde Mid Strength which is quite nice too and just lighter on the alcohol which is almost definitely a good thing for your health.

Bighead No Carb Beer

1. BigHead – 0g

Energy: 370 kJ (88 Cal) // Carbs: 0.0g

This amazing creation is made by Burleigh Brewing Company actually has ZERO carbs. That’s right. None. I don’t know what kind of wizardry is going on here but it’s absolutely delicious.

What better to enjoy your low carb beer with than a low carb pizza!

Our Protein Pizza Base mix has just 6g of carbs and a whopping 50g of protein in the whole base! Now that’s a winning combo.
