No Sugar, Low Carb Chocolate Bars by Well Naturally // Product Review

A few weeks ago I reviewed a sugar free white chocolate by VITAWERX which I really liked, but many of you guys wanted a regular dairy milk chocolate, so I went out supermarket hunting, tried a few different options and came across these No Sugar, Low Carb Chocolate Bars by Well Naturally. I picked these Low Carb Chocolate Bars by Well Naturally from Woolworths but I have seen them in other shops too. They've got a huge range of dairy milk chocolate, dark chocolate and flavoured favourites too. They have big blocks and these little bars. For the purpose of this review, I'm focusing on the plain dairy milk version, however my personal favourite is the dark chocolate and orange flavour – it's quite incredible!

So, how does this Low Carb Chocolate taste?

As you may know, I have much more of a savoury tooth than a sweet tooth so it's been a while since I've tucked into a block of Cadbury, but given it was easter recently, I did indulge in a couple of regular chocolate eggs so I've got a good reference point. Context out of the way, I thought these were really really good. The texture is really creamy and smooth like you want from chocolate and the flavour was quite good. I MUCH prefer dark chocolate so it wasn't quite chocolatey enough for me, but as I said they do have a dark chocolate variety which is incredible. With this regular milk chocolate variety, I did find there was a touch of bitterness in the aftertaste which I think is a result of the natural sweeteners used (more on that below). Funnily enough, I didn't notice the bitterness in the dark chocolate variety but I'm not sure if that's just because you expect dark chocolate to be a bit bitter. So, what is in this No Sugar, Low Carb Chocolate Bars by Well Naturally?

The ingredients for the 45g Milk Chocolate variety is as follows, but they're all very similar:
Cocoa Mass & Cocoa Butter, Milk Solids (Milk Powder, Milk Fat), Soluble Dietary Fibre (Polydextrose), Erythritol, Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin), Natural Flavour, Natural Sweetener (Stevia). Chocolate Contains 34% Cocoa Solids And 24% Milk Solids.
Very standard stuff for a chocolate bar with the exception of the sugar being swapped out for the Polydextrose and Erythritol to act as the sweeteners. I've gone into detail on Polydextrose and Erythritol in previous blog posts so I won't recount here, if you're interested, check out my previous low carb product reviews.

Nutritionally speaking, how does this Low Carb Chocolate compare?

Let's start with the inaccuracy of having a serve as 15g… who on earth only eats 15g of chocolate! It's really important to always check the serve size as so many companies have this same issue. Cadbury is not doing much better with their serve coming in at 25g. Let's be realistic here. Per 100g (~6.6 serves) of No Sugar, Low Carb Chocolate Bars by Well Naturally contains: ✅ Energy: 1810 kJ (433 Cal) ✅ Protein: 7.3g ✅ Fat: 36.6g ✅ Carbs (total): 10.4g ✅ – Sugars: 9.1g Compare that to 100g (4 serves) of Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate Fair Trade (200g block) Energy: 2250 kJ (537 Cal) Protein: 7.5g Fat: 29.9g Carbs (total): 58.7g – Sugars: 57.4g So in summary, per 100g (ignoring the arbitrary serve), No Sugar, Low Carb Chocolate Bars by Well Naturally has around 20% less calories, almost identical protein, but a whopping 83% Less Carbs when compared to Cadbury's Dairy Milk Chocolate Fair Trade (200g block)# #Information taken from https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/826428/cadbury-dairy-milk-chocolate-fair-trade 14/04/18

Did it deliver on it's promise?

Absolutely. It's creamy, it's delicious, it takes like chocolate and delivers all of that with over 80% less carbs. That's a big win in my books. As I said before, my favourite flavour is the Dark Chocolate and Orange flavour – it's freakin delicious. Crumbled up, this chocolate would make an absolutely delicious topping on our Protein Pancakes too. Or even chopped up and put into our new Protein Banana Bread – OMG that would be good. Sweet (ba-boom-tish), so where can I buy No Sugar, Low Carb Chocolate Bars by Well Naturally?

It's available in most Woolworths I've been into which is good. It's unfortunate that they've been relegated to the health food isle as I'm sure they'd get a lot more traction in the regular chocolate section. Cadbury has a pretty good hold on that isle though! According to their website, you can also buy Well Naturally's products in IGAs, Coles, independant grocers as well as online.
